The top eyepiece for the Opticron HR scopes is the variable zoom 18-54/24-72 SDL. This equates to a 18-54 zoom on a HR60 ED and a 24-72 on an HR80 ED model. A 24x eyepiece allows the object being viewed to appear 1/24th of it's actual distance away when compared to the naked eye. This means that an object 480mm distant appears to be only 20m away and at the other end of the scale at 72mm the object appears to be only just over 6m away. Perfect for searching groups of waders and wildfowl at a large distance or scanning tree tops, heathland and gorse for that elusive smaller bird.
The higher the magnification the greater the image and colour distortion but these effects are dramatically reduced by using ED objective lenses and the field of view is far larger at 24x than at 72x.
