Top 5 things to photograph this bank holiday weekend

The Vikings are coming! To Corfe Castle this weekend.

It’s bank holiday weekend and we’re going to be out and about with our cameras – we hope you will be too. Here is our top five list of things to photograph in Wiltshire, Dorset and surrounding areas this weekend.

1 Saxon & Viking Encampment at Corfe Castle, Purbeck – All weekend

The striking medieval monument near Wareham has provided many spectacular photographic opportunities for both amateur and professional photographers. Left as ruins by the Parliamentarians in 1646, the majestic pile is one of the most photographed sites in Dorset. This weekend, there’s the chance to capture something a little different on camera, when Corfe Castle plays host to a three day Saxon & Viking Encampment. This is a Living History Encampment and among the many sights to capture will be battle re-enactment, life in a Saxon village and Viking traders.

Admission is £6.50 for adults.

2 Camp Out for the Dawn Chorus at Woodmill Outdoor Activities Centre, Swaythling, Southampton – Saturday to Sunday

You’re unlikely to get much sleep at this one, but you will get the chance to photograph some creatures of the night – and the early morning. This family-based event invites participants to camp out overnight and discover some of the night time wildlife around the centre with the Hawthorns Centre. You’ll be up late and then getting out of your sleeping bag very early – at 4am! – to catch the dawn chorus. A rare chance to photograph nocturnal animals – you’ll just have to catch up on your sleep later!

3 Poole Street Arts Festival, Poole Quay – Monday

Poole Quay will be bustling with top-end open-air street art this Monday. Part of Wave 105’s Summertime in the South events calendar, there will be a huge range of the world’s best street performers. Internationally acclaimed artists will mingle with local artists. Expect stunning costumes and surprising displays; plenty to add to your photo album.

The event goes on into the evening when a spectacular fire show is promised by Hamworthy’s Flame Fire, which is sure to provide a plethora of amazing photo opportunities.

4 Downton Cuckoo Fair, Downton – Saturday

This free event for all the family takes place on Downton, Wiltshire, and has all the features of a traditional May fair – Morris dancing, maypoles, street entertainment and shows for children, including Punch & Judy. There’s also the chance to witness artisans at work in rural craft demonstrations – many of whom will be all too happy to pose for a picture. It’s free to attend to Cuckoo Fair, which starts at 10am.

5 Sunrise to Sunset Windsurf, Poole Harbour – Saturday

In aid of the Cancer Research charity, this all-day windsurfing challenge is another early starter. If you want to catch the first surfers in the water, you’ll have to be ready to roll at 5.30am! However, if you’re not a morning person the surfing goes on all day until 6.30pm, so there’s plenty of opportunity for great action shots. All levels of surfers will be taking part in a range of events, from experienced surfers to complete beginners.

Wherever you take your camera this weekend, we hope you have a fun bank holiday. We’ll be out and about on our bikes and cameras over the weekend, so we’ll be closed all day on Sunday and Monday.

For cameras and camera accessories to help in your mission, call in before 5pm on Saturday, or visit our online store.
