Sony FE 85mm F1.4 GM

"Sony 85mm 1.4; This is a terrific lens, combined with a Sony camera body it is an 'almost perfect' image making tool, and by 'almost perfect' I find one or two non intuitive handling niggles with the actual camera (A7iii) are what lets the side down, not the lens. Generally this lens renders smooth, painterly abstract colour field backgrounds to juxtapose with sharp subject matter making it a joy to use and 'picture make' through the viewfinder especially portraits. As with any 85 its an easy focal length to compose with but this lens has the advantage of spot on focus like you wouldn't believe, time and time again, and again, and again, and again, and again, it just simply 'nails it', without fail, giving you so much confidence, possibly too much confidence. I have used it alongside my exotic 'heritage' canon FD glass on the same body (main reason for Sony) and same subject and its hard to decide which provides the better image, (horses for courses), I want to say straight out of the camera the old Canons although not quite as sharp have a richer warmth but are slow to use as everything is manual of course, whereas the Sony 85 with its instant 'perfect' eye focus is so fast and pin sharp, however I think the colour is a bit cooler than the Canons, and the images possibly a tad overexposed if left to camera to decide, maybe it's me because I unerringly err on underexposure being brought up on reversal film, whatever both are easily adjusted but it's the sharpness and the relentless reliable focus which is amazing, the more i used it, the more the whole set up seemed to know exactly what I wanted. The lens motor isn't silent and this bothered me for all of 2 minutes - should it? May bother me if using video? Anyway I am a very happy bunny so far and you soon use up a couple of 64Gig cards just messing about and every shot is blisteringly sharp where you want it to be blisteringly sharp, just makes pruning so much tougher. This 85 definitely has character, but not in an eccentric way and when coupled to a Sony body the two become a staggeringly awesome piece of photographic kit."
