The Canon EW-78F petal lens hood is specifically designed to use with the RF 24-240mm f4.5-6.3 IS USM lens

  • Using a lens hood helps prevent light from hitting the front lens element from the sides - reducing flare. Pictures taken with a lens hood fitted can have richer colours and deeper saturation.
  • A plastic lens hood also provides some shock protection to the front of the lens if it is accidentally dropped.
  • A hood for a lens with this zoom range can offer only limited protection from flare at the telephoto setting.  In that situation, you may find it useful to add a hand or a hat to help keep out any bright light.

"I get really grumpy when lens manufacturers don’t include lens hood with the less expensive ranges of lens. It smacks of greater profit margins more than anything. There isn’t a lot to this lens hood to be honest, but as it has to handle the 24mm end of the focal length range, there was always going to be less plastic for your £’s. An inspection of >500 images taken in bright and sunny weather did not show any obvious lens flare issues except when shooting towards the sun (to be expected). A functional bit of kit."
