Nigel Goldsmith - Video and Photographic Art

Hands-on Darkroom & Cyanotype Printing | Seminar - Camera-less Photographic Techniques

We’re delighted to welcome photographer and visual artist Nigel Goldsmith to the show, where he will deliver a range of engaging, hands-on experiences in the Merley Room.

Black & White Darkroom Experience
(AM Sessions 10:15 - 11:15 | PM Sessions 13:15 - 14:15)

Step inside Nigel’s mobile darkroom and try traditional black-and-white printing for yourself. Sessions are bookable in advance (15 minutes each), and participants must bring their own pre-processed black-and-white negatives. You’ll learn what’s involved in processing film and printing images, including how negatives are enlarged and how contact sheets are produced.

Participants may bring 35mm or medium format negatives (up to 6x7cm). 7x5" paper will be provided, with a limited supply of 10x8" paper also available. Alongside the printing experience, Nigel will demonstrate essential darkroom equipment, explain the film development process, and offer the opportunity to practise loading reels using spare film.

Camera-less Photography Talk
(12:00 PM, Inside the Merley Room)

Nigel will present a 30-minute talk on camera-less photography techniques, including cyanotype and extrreme pinhole photography. There may be repeat sessions scheduled depending on demand.

Cyanotype Printing
(Drop-in Sessions when the Merley Room is open to visitors)

In addition to the darkroom experience, visitors can try cyanotype printing—an early, camera-less photographic process—through informal drop-in sessions. These will run alongside the scheduled darkroom bookings, with prints approximately 10" x 8" in size.
