Can you put a lens cap over a filter?

Filters screw directly onto the front of your lens using the filter thread, and most lens caps are designed to fit over them just as they would over a bare lens. That said, it's worth double-checking the outer diameter of your filter when purchasing a replacement cap, as slim-profile filters sit flush and work perfectly with standard caps, while some thicker filter frames can make a tight fit. In general, though, you can absolutely leave your lens cap on over a filter and it will protect both the filter and the lens behind it.

Do I need a filter for my camera lens?

You certainly don't need one to take great photos, but for most photographers, filters quickly become an essential part of the kit bag. A basic UV or protection filter is one of the most sensible things you can add to any lens. It sits in front of the glass and takes the knocks and scratches so your lens doesn't have to. Beyond protection, filters like circular polarisers and neutral density filters can achieve effects in-camera that are difficult or simply impossible to replicate accurately in post-processing. If you shoot landscapes, architecture, water, or anything involving bright light or reflections, a good filter will save you a lot of editing time and give your images a cleaner, more natural result.
